Description
The goal of canopy spreaders is to expand the 3D size of the canopy to reduce tucking time and increase light efficiency. The primary benefits are:
- Significantly reduced labour for canopy management
- Spray penetration
- Increased fruit quality
- Decreased water stress
Tucking time is reduced to 1-2x a year while the increased light efficiency may allow a reduction in canopy height and may reduce the lag of phenolic maturation. Improved photosynethic efficiency (that is the percentage of leaves receiving the maximum possible sunlight) has been shown to strengthen the linkage between sugar accumulation and phenolic maturation.
We see an average ROI on this product of 2 years through reduced labour (calculated by clients), determined by your current tucking process.
The first spreader is normally attached (permanently) to the post about 4” above the fruiting wire and the second about 16” above that. Your fruiting / lifting wires are held by the spreader. As the plant grows, the spreaders can be closed to keep a tight canopy and do not interfere with any vineyard equipment when closed.
There are options for any kind of post and different widths, based on row spacing.
